Parliament Hill School

Parliament Hill School features expansive grounds and a unique location bordering Hampstead Heath, offering a valuable opportunity to support and extend the habitat of the local hedgehog population. Its setting provides an ideal blend of urban and natural environments, making it a perfect space for biodiversity-focused projects.

2026: Our new ponds and restored wildflower meadows have been thriving and buzzing with life despite the drought.

In spring 2026 we started growing vegetables in raised beds, re-imagining a parking spaces. It’s been a massive success, loved by the students, grounds staff and food tech teachers. We now have a weekly food-growing club running after school on Mondays, led by our new staff member Isabel.

Autumn 2026 is seeing us reclaiming land that has been swallowed by masses of bramble in the back field. Our vision is to replace the bramble with a mini wetland, meadows & thick hedges.

Gooseberries

Gooseberries on the school grounds! A simple delight for children, many of whom rarely get the chance to pick and taste fruit straight from the plant.
Farm Animals

Donkeys Nora and Dora, and sheep, goats and other animals from Mudchute City Farm have come to visit and delight the students.
Ponds

We built 3 ponds where frogs and even newts started breeding alongside dragonflies, damselflies, the aquatic China-mark moth and many more creatures. A favourite spot for sitting and observing.
The Orchard

An unused front area was beautifully transformed with 16 apple trees, 3 pear trees, 16 fruit bushes, and a vibrant display of annual wildflowers to provide colour and nectar for pollinators.
Wildflower Meadow

We restored a wildflower meadow that is now vibrant with different native flowers and grasses attracting many butterflies, grasshoppers, hoverflies and other insects.
The Cut Flower Garden

In Spring 2024, Growing Green has been awarded £500 for a butterfly and a cut flower garden from the Veolia Sustainability Fund. The cut flower garden has brought the students and staff so much joy and it keeps giving.
Allotment

We started growing vegetables and have been harvesting courgettes, tomatoes, to squashes, chillies, basil, lemongrass, rainbow chard … . Produce is used by students in Food tech class, and club students can also take their harvest home.
The Dead Hedge

We built a dead hedge—a simple yet effective habitat for insects, invertebrates, and small mammals. It recycles natural materials while providing shelter and boosting biodiversity!
Water butts

We installed 8 water butts in two different parts of the school grounds, capable of holding a total of 1600 liters of water. This sustainable solution helps conserve rainwater, ensuring a reliable supply for gardening while reducing pressure on mains water during dry spells.

Teens examine the pond, observing water life up close—a wonderful way to learn and connect with nature.
