We’re hiring!
Nature & Wildlife Club Leader, part-time
To connect students with nature, we would like to establish nature clubs in our schools. For that, we are looking for a nature enthusiast who would like to work with teenagers in an urban setting, help us look after our green spaces and work with us to create new wildlife habitats in schools.
Role: Nature & Wildlife Club Leader for Secondary School Children
Contract Type: Freelance
Hours: 2h per week in one school for an after-school club (1h) and admin/prep time (1hr).
Payment: £40 per hour (ie £80 per session).
In time, and depending on student numbers, you may be able to get an assistant.
Location: Initially at a school in Highgate/Archway, expanding to other schools in the Camden/Islington/Haringey area over time.
About the Role
Nature & Wildlife Club Leader (Freelance)
Starting September 2026
Help young people connect with nature and create more space for wildlife in North London schools
Growing Green Climate Action is looking for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Nature & Wildlife Club Leader to run a weekly after-school nature club for secondary school students.
You do not need a Forest School qualification, teaching qualification or formal environmental education background to apply.
We're looking for someone who loves nature, enjoys working with young people and can confidently lead practical outdoor activities. You might be a wildlife-friendly gardener, conservation volunteer, retired teacher, ecologist, horticulturalist, ranger, youth worker, outdoor enthusiast, or simply someone with strong nature knowledge and relevant experience.
This role would particularly suit someone who gets excited about helping wildlife thrive—whether through gardening, habitat creation, conservation work, food growing, or helping young people notice and care about the natural world around them.
About Growing Green
Growing Green Climate Action is a North London-based non-profit working with secondary schools across Camden, Islington and Haringey to improve biodiversity and connect young people with nature.
We help schools create wildlife habitats such as ponds, hedgerows, orchards and wildflower meadows, while engaging students in practical conservation and outdoor learning.
We are a small, friendly and hands-on team that cares deeply about both nature and young people.
About the Role
You will lead a weekly after-school Nature Club for students aged 11–16, helping them develop confidence, curiosity and a deeper connection with the natural world.
Sessions will be practical, engaging and fun, making use of the school's outdoor spaces and encouraging students to learn by doing.
Activities may include:
Bushcraft skills such as fire lighting, outdoor cooking, shelter building and whittling
Wildlife identification and nature observation
Learning about native plants, trees, birds, insects and other species
Nature-based crafts and seasonal activities
Gardening and habitat creation
Nature connection and wellbeing activities
Supporting students to care for wildlife on their school site
Alongside running the club, you will work with Growing Green to identify opportunities to improve biodiversity within the school grounds and involve students in creating and caring for new habitats.
Projects might include:
Planting native hedgerows
Creating pollinator-friendly planting schemes
Establishing wildlife ponds
Developing food-growing areas
Improving neglected corners for wildlife and outdoor learning
Growing Green will provide support, advice and resources for larger habitat projects.
Hours and Pay
Role: Nature Club Leader (Freelance)
Location: Initially at a secondary school in the Highgate/Archway area, with opportunities to work in additional schools as the programme expands.
Hours:
Thursdays during term time (approximately 10 sessions per term)
Nature & Wildlife Club: 3.15pm–4.15pm
Plus approximately one hour per week for preparation, administration and liaison with school staff
Pay: £40 per hour (ie £80 per session)
As the programme grows, there may be opportunities for additional hours and clubs in other schools.
We Are Looking For Someone Who:
Loves nature and enjoys sharing that enthusiasm with young people
Has knowledge or experience in wildlife, biodiversity, conservation, gardening, horticulture, food growing or related fields
Is confident leading small groups of secondary school students outdoors
Is practical, organised and able to work independently
Understands basic health and safety and is willing to learn safe fire-pit cooking if needed
Enjoys helping young people build confidence, curiosity and connection with nature
Communicates well with students, teachers and school staff
Holds, or is willing to obtain, an enhanced DBS check
Not Sure You Tick Every Box?
Please apply anyway!
We are much more interested in enthusiasm, practical experience and a genuine passion for nature than formal qualifications. If you have experience in wildlife gardening, conservation, outdoor activities, youth work, horticulture, volunteering or environmental projects, we would love to hear from you.
Why Join Us?
This is an opportunity to help shape the next generation of nature champions while making a tangible difference for wildlife in local school grounds.
You'll be joining a supportive team that believes schools can be places where both young people and nature flourish.
If that sounds like something you'd like to be part of, we'd love to hear from you.
